Escobar Falls to Top Seed at NCAA Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships came to an end on Thursday for three Texas Tech men's tennis players as Gonzalo Escobar lost in the second round of singles and Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia were defeated in first-round doubles action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Thirty-seventh ranked Escobar lost his second round match to the tournament's top seed and second-ranked Henrique Cunha of Duke, 6-2, 6-3. The loss moves Escobar to 24-8 for the 2009-10 school year.
In the afternoon matches, Tech's top tandem of 17th-ranked Carvalho and Garcia fell to 31st-ranked Jason Jung and Evan King of Michigan, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2). The duo finish the year with a record of 16-11.
"Gonzalo (Escobar) lost to the top seed of the tournament, but I was proud of the way he played," head coach Tim Siegel stated. "Ray (Raony Carvalho) and Rafael (Garcia) played well in doubles and had two set points. I'm very proud of the way these guys played all season."
