LUBBOCK, TX - Gonzalo Escobar was two short games away from elimination at the USTA/ITA Indoor Championships in Flushing, New York, before he mounted a comeback to claim the match victory.
Gonzalo lost the first set, 2-6, and was down, 1-4, in the second set to UNC's Jose Hernandez when he turned the match in his favor. Escobar fought to win the second set, 7-6, and then rolled to a 6-1 win in the third set to advance to the Round of 16 on Friday morning.
Coach Tim Siegel smiled, "Gonzalo played a complete match today! He was able to comeback against a very good opponent by playing defensive tennis when necessary and he attacked at the right time. It was a terrific win for him."
On Friday, Escobar takes on Ohio State's No. 8 seed Chase Buchanan in the Round of 16. Their match time has not yet been established but will begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT) or later.
