LUBBOCK, TX - Red Raider Gonzalo Escobar was unable to hold off Virginia's No. 6 seed, Michael Shabaz, in the opening singles round of Main Draw at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships.
Escobar lost the opening round match to Shabaz, 6-2, 6-4. The Red Raider bounced back in the first round of consolation play with a victory over Mehdi Bouras of UNLV in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Escobar meets Michigan's Jason Jung in the second consolation round on Friday morning with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
The second Texas Tech singles match in Main Draw featured Raony Carvalho. After playing a good first set, Carvalho's arm injury, suffered earlier in the fall season, forced him to retire from the match in the third set. Chris Kearney of UC Irvine gained the match win, 2-6, 6-4, 5-0 (retired).
For the first time in school history, Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar, earned entry to the Main Draw singles. Raony Carvalho is the No. 16 ranked player in the country and teammate Gonzalo Escobar is the No. 24 ranked player nationally, according to the recently released 2010 Campbell/ITA Preseason Singles Rankings.
The tournament, hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, kicked off on Saturday, October 3, with six rounds of prequalifying and qualifying singles and doubles leading up to the main draw competition.
Play resumes Friday with quarterfinal singles matches in the morning, followed by doubles in the afternoon.
