LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team wrapped up regular-season play Friday night as the Red Raiders were shutout by Baylor, 1-0, at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco.
Tech (11-7-1/4-5-1 Big 12) was once again without All-Big 12 first teamer junior Taylor Lytle, who is still recovering from a high ankle sprain and did not travel with the team. Tech did put junior defender Whitney Sharpe into the game for her first quality minutes since the Texas game, but she reinjured her ankle on the goal and was carried off the field.
"It was certainly a disappointing result tonight in Waco," head coach Tom Stone said. "The team played very hard and created three easy chances to score in the first half. If any of those go in, I think it would have been a pretty easy win for us. However, allowing Baylor and their chaotic style to hang around until the end only encouraged their efforts and it gave them a shot to win, which they ultimately did."
The game was scoreless the first half before Baylor (11-7-2/4-6 Big 12) got the game-winning goal in the 68th minute as Christine Clark beat her defender to the far side and the shot went far post from 12 yards out.
"We were in pretty good shape defensively and then Whitney Sharpe went down grabbing her ankle and the referee played on and we had to scramble to get across to the ball," said Stone. "Before anyone got across, the Baylor player hit it well to the back post and in the net."
The Bears outshot the Red Raiders 11-8 and had six corner kicks to Tech's two.
"You know what you are going to get at Baylor," Stone stated. "They narrowed their field to make it harder to pass around them. They make no attempt to pass the ball, only launching it forward is allowed and they do it very well. Their total commitment to the kick and run game is a handful to play against. Unfortunately, when we broke them down, we missed some easy chances that would have made this a special night for us. Now we find ourselves in a tough spot needing a win in the Big 12 tourney next week in San Antonio to get back on track."
Sophomore Tiffini Smith gave it her all for the Red Raiders as she made many dangerous runs up the field and created havoc on offense for Tech.
Senior goalkeeper Colleen Pitts started and played well in goal as she had four saves on the night.
The Red Raiders now head to San Antonio, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship Nov. 3, 5 and 7 at Blossom Soccer Stadium. Tech is the seventh seed and will face second-seeded Oklahoma State at 8 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 3, in the quarterfinals.
