Gonzalo Escobar Advances to Quarterfinals With Two wins

LUBBOCK, TX - The Texas Tech men's tennis team combined to win seven singles matches Sunday with Gonzalo Escobar and Ryan Ybarra earning two wins each at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
Escobar, the No. 4 singles seed, defeated No. 17 seed Ashwin Vijayragavan of UTPA, 6-3, 6-3, in the morning and then closed out UTSA's Martin Ayala, 6-2, 7-6, to become the sole Red Raider to advance to the quarterfinals. He takes on Texas A&M's Alexis Klegou on Monday at 9:00 a.m.
No. 9 seed Rafael Garcia defeated Baylor's Robert Verzaal in his opening match, 7-5, 6-4. Garcia lost his next match to Texas A&M's No. 1 seed, Austin Krajicek, 6-3, 6-4. Teammate Vitor Manzini also won his first match on Sunday over Christian Saravia of Rice, 6-2, 7-5. Manzini lost his next match to Rice's Harry Fowler, 7-6, 6-0. Luis Grangeiro, the No. 13 seed from Baylor, ended Raphael Pfister's hopes of advancing, 6-4, 6-2.
In consolation singles, Ryan Ybarra beat Rice's Andy Wang, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0, and then gained his second win on Sunday ending with a super-tiebreaker over Joe Hattrup, 6-7, 6-2, 12-10. Ybarra meets TCU's Cameron Nash at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. Red Raider Jeff Bryan notched a singles win over Santiago Centeno of TCU, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9, before losing to Rice's Oscar Podlewski, 6-1, 6-0. David Pace lost to UTA's Mindaugas Celedinas, 6-4, 6-1. David Gonzalez dropped his consolation match to Matt Westmoreland of TAMU-CC, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action on Sunday, Escobar and Garcia lost to the Texas A&M duo, Klegou and Klores, 9-8.
The Texas Regional is one of 12 held around the country in the month of October with the singles and doubles champion from each site qualifying for the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The national tournament is slated for Nov. 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York.
