
Escobar and Garcia Advance in USTA/ITA Singles and Doubles

The Texas Tech men's tennis team won each of their first round singles matches on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and succeed in advancing four singles and a doubles pair to Sunday's action in College Station, Texas.
With No. 4 seed Gonzalo Escobar and No. 9 seed Rafael Garcia each receiving a bye in the opening round, six additional Red Raiders defeated their opponents and advanced to the Round of 64. Jeff Bryan stopped Lamar's Ermilov 7-5, 6-2, while Ryan Ybarra downed UTA's Moreno, 6-4, 6-4. Vitor Manzini defeated Chang of Rice in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, and David Pace won against TAMU-CC's Robinson, 6-4, 6-1. Raphael Pfister beat Nyatoti of Prairie View A&M, 6-1, 6-1, as David Gonzalez beat UTA's Sano, 6-4, 6-1.
In the Round of 64, the Red Raiders came away with four wins to advance to Sunday's action. No. 4 seed Gonzalo Escobar stopped Lamar's Diego Snyder in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. No. 9 seed Rafael Garcia beat Tyler Brown of UTSA in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Vitor Manzini won his second three-set match of the day when he defeated Siah Mbarek of TCU, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Raphael Pfister beat John Lewis of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-4.
After the winning the opening set against No. 17 seed TAMU-CC's Laurent Montoisy, Jeff Bryan dropped the next two sets and was unable to advance, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Ryan Ybarra also fell in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, to Julian Bley of Baylor. David Pace couldn't get past UT's Sudanwa Sitaram, 7-6(8), 6-1, and David Gonzalez lost his match to TAMU's No. 8 seed Alexey Grigorov, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles play, No. 4 seed Escobar and Garcia received a bye in the first round, and then beat UTSA's Ayala and Morieras, 9-8, to become the only Red Raider duo to advance to play on Sunday. Manzini and Ybarra won their first match against UTA's Celedinas and Yauheni, 8-5, but then fell to the No. 1 doubles seed Dadamo and Krajicek from Texas A&M, 8-4. Gonzalez and Pfister also received a bye in the opening round before losing to Rice's No. 8 seed Nusslein and Saravia, 8-5. Bryan and Pace won their first double match against Lamar's Snyder and Valdenebro, 8-4, and the fell to the UTPA's No. 9 seed Bernstein and Vijayragavan, 8-5.
Singles action on Sunday begins at 9:00 a.m. for Garcia with Escobar, Manzini, and Pfister taking the courts for their matches thirty minutes later. Match winners will continue singles play at noon or 12:30 p.m. Escobar and Garcia begin their doubles match at 4:00 p.m.
The regional is one of 12 held around the country in the month of October with the singles and doubles champion from each site qualifying for the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The national tournament is slated for Nov. 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York.
