LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team suffered its third loss to a ranked opponent this year as it fell at No. 10 Texas A&M, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
Playing the Aggies (11-3/4-1 Big 12) in College Station for the third time in four years, Tech (9-5-1/2-3-1 Big 12) was without defensive standout junior Whitney Sharpe who went down during the Texas game on Friday. Despite the loss, the Red Raiders should retain a top 25 RPI ranking.
"This was definitely a disappointing performance by our squad today," said head coach Tom Stone. "It was easily the worst performance of the year and this is not said to take anything away from Texas A&M. They were all business and had a very good Sunday showing. Losing Whitney on Friday night to a vicious tackle hurt us big time, but I thought we'd do more with all the time in midfield we were given today. Unfortunately, we were our own worst enemy and continued to give the ball away."
The Aggies scored their first goal in the 16th minute as junior Bri Young scored from 40 yards out on a free kick. Texas A&M took a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute as senior Whitney Hooper took a shot inside the six-yard box on a ball from junior Merritt Matthias.
Tech's best chances of the game came from the Red Raider bench. Senior Leanne Mihelich and freshman Anna Lavis, who saw her first playing time of the year, gave Tech a lift and created two of the best chances of the first half.
"I was really happy for some of our young kids who came on for the first time and they showed that they have heart to come in and make a difference," Stone said
Texas A&M led 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Aggies secured the win with two more goals, both from senior Rachel Shipley. Shipley scored on a rebound after a free kick in the 71st minute and seven minutes later she connected on a one-timer from top of box into the left side of the nets.
Texas A&M outshot Tech 25-11 and had three corner kicks to the Red Raiders' two.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wikelius took the loss in the nets for Tech as she played all 90 minutes with seven saves. Wikelius moves to 3-2-1 on the year.
Tech returns home for its lone match of the weekend as it host Kansas on Fri., Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
