LUBBOCK, Texas - Getting its eighth shutout of the season, the Texas Tech soccer team defeated Colorado, 1-0, Friday night in front of a season-high 1,643 fans at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Tech (9-3/2-1 Big 12) got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute as freshman Jessica Disabella served the ball to the back post on a corner kick and junior Casey McCall hammered it home from six yards out with her head.
"It was very fitting Casey got the goal," said head coach Tom Stone. "She played with great attitude the whole game. Her goal was an extraordinary commitment in the air."
Tech had a lot of the ball most of the first half and led in shots 7-5. Tech's other two best chances to score came from freshman Jessica Fuston and Disabella, who both had shots on frame that were turned away by Colorado's (5-5-1/1-1-1 Big 12) keeper.
Tech led 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Buffaloes applied the pressure and continued to attack down the flanks but created not real dangerous scoring opportunities.
"Whenever you play Colorado you just accept that they will have a lot of the ball," Stone stated. "It becomes more about good defending in your own end and denying opportunities to come from their possessions. I thought we did very well in denying those chances."
The last 10 minutes Tech dug in to defend its one-goal lead and the standing room only crowd got behind the effort.
"We showed great mentality down the stretch," Stone said. "Colorado is a great team and we feel very fortunate to have come out on top."
Having played each other four times in the Stone era, the series now stands 2-2 as Colorado heads to the Pac-10.
Senior goalkeeper Colleen Pitts got the win in the nets as she played all 90 minutes recording five saves. It marked her sixth shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. Tech's eight shutouts tie the school record for most shutouts in a season as it also had eight in 1994 and 1995. The nine wins on the year is the most for a team under Stone and the most since the Red Raiders had 13 in 1996.
Next up for the Red Raiders is a match with Nebraska on Sun., Oct. 3, at 1 p.m., at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
