
Carvalho Heads to ITA National Indoor Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - After earning the wild card spot into the 2009 ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Texas Tech sophomore Raony Carvalho begins play on Thurs., Nov. 5.
No. 25 Carvalho will face No. 1 Oleksandr Nedovyesov (Oklahoma State) in the first round at 3:30 p.m. CST on Thursday.
The ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be hosted by Yale University and be played at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn. The singles draw will consist of 32 players with a mandatory consolation for first round losers and runs Nov. 5-8.
Carvalho earned the wild card spot for his play this fall. The Brazilia, Brazil, native has posted a 7-2 record in singles in just two tournaments. Carvalho got the biggest win of his collegiate career at the ITA All-American Championships when he upset No. 13 Justin Kronauge (Ohio State), 7-6 (4), 6-7, (7), 6-3. Also at the ITA All-American, he beat No. 20 Boris Conkic (Tennessee), 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, in the opening round. Carvalho then defeated No. 30 Austin Krajicek (Texas A&M), 7-6 (7), 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
Carvalho is just the second singles player from Texas Tech to play in the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as Bojan Szumanski competed in the championships twice in 2004 and 2006.
