Lady Raiders Get Win Over UTA

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's basketball improved to 4-1 on the year after beating Texas-Arlington, 71-37, on the second day of the Basketball Travelers Tip-Off Tourney at the United Spirit Arena. In the first game of the day, San Francisco defeated Prairie View A&M, 68-64.
The Lady Raiders started off strong, going up 13-2 the first eight and half minutes of play. The 11-point lead was their largest of the first half. The Mavericks (2-3) whittled away at the lead, cutting it to as few as two points, 25-23, as Veronica Mergerson hit a jumper with 3:24 remaining.
Tech lead at the half, 28-25.
The Lady Raiders came out strong after the break as they opened the second half on a 14-4 run through the first eight minutes. Tech's biggest lead of the game was 34 points as Mary Bokenkamp hit a jumper with 50 seconds left to give the Lady Raiders the 71-37 win. Tech held UTA to just 12 points in the last 20 minutes.
Kierra Mallard led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds, marking her first double-double of the season and the fifth of her career. Both the 18 points and 12 boards were season highs for the sophomore. She also collected a career-high six blocks.Ashlee Roberson chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for Tech as well. Monique Smalls tallied six assists.
Meghan Nelson led UTA with 16 points, while Shalyn Martin grabbed 10 rebounds.
Tech shot 46.7 percent from the field (28-60), while the Mavericks were 25.4 percent (16-63) on the night. The Lady Raiders outrebounded UTA by 11 (47-36).
The Basketball Travelers tip-off Tourney concludes on Sunday as USF and UTA play at 12 p.m., followed by Tech and Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m.
