LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's tennis player Raony Carvalho has earned the wildcard spot into the 2009 ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 5-8.
The ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be hosted by Yale University and be played at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn. The singles draw will consist of 32 players with a mandatory consolation for first round losers.
No. 25 Carvalho earned the wildcard spot for his play this fall. The Brazilia, Brazil, native has posted a 7-2 record in singles in just two tournaments. Carvalho got the biggest win of his collegiate career at the ITA All-American Championships when he upset No. 13 Justin Kronauge (Ohio State), 7-6 (4), 6-7, (7), 6-3. Also at the ITA All-American, he beat No. 20 Boris Conkic (Tennessee), 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, in the opening round. Carvalho then defeated No. 30 Austin Krajicek (Texas A&M), 7-6 (7), 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
"I am really happy for Ray," said head coach Tim Siegel. "It is a great opportunity and well deserved. His three great wins this fall ultimately got him the wildcard."
Carvalho is just the second singles player from Texas Tech to play in the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as Bojan Szumanski competed in the championships twice in 2004 and 2006.
