LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Softball began a series of fall games Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field to help prepare for the 2009 campaign. Game one saw the Red Raiders beat the reigning NAIA Champion Lubbock Christian Chaps 3-2 before defeating Midland College 6-5.
Because fall games are not officially counted by the NCAA or on a team's record, official stats were not kept. Tech did, however, score three runs against Lubbock Christian on nine hits. Senior Alex Watkins went 1-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Tye Coats also had an RBI from her single in the bottom of the third. Freshman Holly Gentsch singled in the sixth to score fellow freshman Skyler Peterson to make the score 3-2. Pitchers Ashly Jacobs and Tye Coats shared the duties from the circle in game one.
In game two, Tech faced the 2008 WJCAC Champion Midland College Chaps which took an early 1-0 lead. The Red Raiders tied the game at ones on an RBI double by Watkins to score Leah Legler in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Danielle Matthews upped the score to 2-1 as she advanced home on a throw by the Chap defense in the third. Midland College added two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. With two on in the 7th, Watkins doubled to right to score Legler and Stephanie Drewry to cap the scoring at 6-5. Watkins and freshman Karli Merlich shared pitching duties in game two.
Fall games, which also include a tournament in the Houston area on Sept. 27 and 28, do not count as part of the NCAA schedule of events, but are an excellent way for teams to compete as practice during the off-season. Tech will complete its weekend scrimmages tomorrow as it faces Midland College at 11:30 a.m., and Lubbock Christian University at 2 p.m. Scores and results will be posted at www.texastech.com
Note: It was previously announced Midland College defeated Texas Tech 5-4, however, there was a scoring error that occurred in game two. This story reflects the correct scores of both games.
