LUBBOCK, Texas - For their efforts on the field and in the classroom, Texas Tech softball players Leah Legler and Megan Shupp were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Softball Team in an announcement by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The two Red Raiders are among just 22 players to receive the honor - 11 first-team honorees and 11 second-team honorees. States inside the district include Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. To be eligible, athletes must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore in standing both athletically and academically and have completed at least one full year at their member institution while participating in a certain percentage of their team's games.
Legler, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, was one of 11 first-team recipients. After being moved to shortstop this past season, she finished second on the team with a .328 avg., while ranking second in the Big 12 in hits and tying for the conference lead in triples with four. She also finished among the league leaders in runs scored with 47 and stolen bases with 16. Legler has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and is majoring in Accounting.
Shupp, a junior, garnered second-team honors after posting career highs in hitting with a .245 avg., doubles, home runs and RBI while being moved from the outfield to second base for much of the year. The League City, Texas, native carries a 3.77 GPA and is majoring in Human Development and Family Studies with plans for medical school.
Tech recently finished up its 2008 campaign with an upset of Missouri in the Big 12 Tournament before falling short of a second-consecutive championship game appearance.
