LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman men's tennis player Raony Carvalho fell one round short of qualifying for the ITA National Indoor Championships Friday as he was edged Monday in the semifinals of the ITA Regional Championships in College Station, Texas.
Carvalho, who, along with teammate Christian Rojmar, is already qualified for the doubles portion of the national indoor meet, won his quarterfinal match Monday morning, coming from a set down to defeat Jordan Rux of Baylor, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Bruno Rosa of Rice would get the better of Carvalho in the semifinals, however, advancing in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
"For a freshman to make the semifinals in this region, it says a lot about how well Raony played," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "By advancing this far in this tournament, Raony is not only one of the top freshmen in the country but one of the top overall players in the country."
In the day's other action, Rojmar advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket with a straight set victory over teammate Milos Kustudija, before falling in three sets to Sam Garfoth-Bles of Rice, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Tech's final remaining player, Joe Hattrup, fell to Marcus Lunt of Texas A&M, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the singles round two consolation bracket.
The tournament ends the Red Raiders' fall season as only Carvalho and Rojmar will attend the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 6-9 at the University of Virginia. Tech kicks off the 2009 campaign Jan. 30 in Tulsa, Okla. against LSU.
