
Carvalho Advances to Quarterfinals at ITA Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman men's tennis player Raony Carvalho advanced to the quarterfinals Sunday in the singles main draw of ITA Regional Championships in College Station, Texas.
In his third round match, Carvalho defeated Baylor's Marc Bruche in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, before edging Piotr Banas of Louisiana-Lafayette later in the day, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Carvalho will face Jordan Rux of Baylor at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Tech's three other players in the singles main draw - James Wilson, Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic - were all bounced in the third round. Wilson fell to Texas A&M's Conor Pollock, 6-2, 6-3, while Breler was edged by Texas' Oliver Sajous, 6-3, 6-4. After taking the opening set, 4-6, Markovic dropped the final two sets to Emmanuel Brighiu of TCU, 6-1, 6-3.
In the singles consolation bracket, both Christian Rojmar and Milos Kustudija advanced to the semifinals as Rojmar defeated Julian Bley of Baylor, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0, and Richard Filkuka of Lamar, 6-0, 6-0. Kustudija edged Jason Lateko of Texas-Arlington, 6-4, 6-1, and Dmitry Minkin, also of UTA, 6-7, 7-6, 1-0. The two teammates will face each other at 8 a.m. Monday morning.
After surviving the first round of play in the singles round two consolation bracket, three of Tech's four players in the bracket - Ethan Horn, David Gonzalez and Gonzalo Escobar - were all eliminated in the round of 16. Joe Hattrup advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Cameron Nash of TCU, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Rodrigo Morgado from Texas-San Antonio, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (6).
"It's been a great tournament so far for Raony and to get to the quarterfinals as freshman is unbelievable, especially since he has defeated several good players on the way," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "Raony has the ability to win this tournament, and hopefully he will continue to play well. Overall, this has been a very good tournament for us, and I hope we can continue to improve."
Monday is the final day of action at ITA Regional Championships. The two finalists in the singles main draw and the winner of the doubles bracket will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships held Nov. 6-9 at the University of Virginia.
