Four Red Raiders Advance to ITA Third Round

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis had four players advance to the third round in the singles main draw Saturday in day one of the ITA Regional Championships in College Station, Texas.
Eight of Tech's 10 players advanced to the second round in singles competition with four - James Wilson, Sinisa Markovic, Raony Carvalho and Michael Breler - qualifying for the third round.
Powered by first round byes, Markovic defeated Jaume Arras of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1, 6-3, while Carvalho edged TCU's Zach Nichols in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
It took Wilson and Breler two matches to advance, though. After getting by Louisiana-Lafayette's Bradley Bristow, 6-3, 6-4, Wilson defeated Jose Garcia of Prairie View A&M in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Breler would move on with straight sets victories, also, beating Max Stratmann of Texas-San Antonio, 6-2, 6-1, and Gonzalo Bienzobas of Texas-Arlington, 6-3, 6-1.
After suffering opening round losses, both Milos Kustudija and Christian Rojmar advanced to the third round in the consolation bracket as Rojmar defeated Casey Powers of TCU, 6-3, 6-3, while Kustudija cruised to a 4-1 opening set lead before Kelubia Mabatah retired due to injury.
Doubles action wasn't as favorable for Tech, however. All four duos were bounced from the main draw with Ethan Horn and Kustudija being the only team to advance to the second round as they edged Rice's Dennis Polyakov and Christian Sarvia, 8-5.
Play resumes Sunday and continues through Monday. The two singles finalists and doubles winner advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at the University of Virginia.
