LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman tennis player Raony Carvalho fell in the finals of the singles consolation bracket Sunday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
After advancing to the finals with two wins on Saturday, Carvalho was edged in straight sets by Guillermo Gomez, 6-1, 6-4. Carvalho finished the weekend with eight total victories in singles and doubles.
In doubles action, Carvalho and senior teammate Christian Rojmar fell in the semifinals of the main draw Saturday, losing 6-1, 6-3, to the Mississippi duo of Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge. Because they advanced to the semifinals, Carvalho and Rojmar are qualified to compete in the National Indoor Championships to be held Nov. 6-9 at the University of Virginia.
"Raony proved to himself, to his teammates, and to us that he is already one of the best players in the country," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "He had a great week winning eight matches total, and he and Christian really played well together. Overall, as a team, it was a good week, but we now have to get ready for regionals in a couple of weeks."
The Red Raiders are off until Oct. 25 when they travel to College Station, Texas, for the ITA Regionals. Results from the Midland Racquet Club Invitational will be posted at Tech's official website, www.texastech.com, Monday afternoon.
