LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team received its first preseason recognition this week. The Red Raiders are ranked No. 22 in the preseason poll released by Golfweek.
"This is a testament to the program that we are ranked in the Top 25," coach Greg Sands said. "People are starting to take notice of the quality of this program. It is a compliment to the players we have had here in the past and the players that are here now."
Tech is coming off its third-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance last season under seventh-year head coach Greg Sands. TTU also reached its seventh-straight NCAA Regionals appearance last year and was ranked No. 32 nationally by Golfweek.
The Red Raiders loose just one letterwinner, All-American Oscar Flores, from last season's squad, while returning five lettermen and adding three highly-touted freshmen. Leading the way this season will be Cali, Colombia, native Santiago Rivas and sophomore Matt Smith from Canberra, Australia.
Tech is one of just three Big 12 schools, all from Texas, to be included in the poll. Texas A&M received the highest ranking of the three at No. 17, while Texas came in at No. 29.
The Red Raiders will open their fall season next week on Sept. 14-16, when they travel to Rocky Face, Ga. to take part in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic.
