
Szumanski Advances at Lubbock Challenger

LUBBOCK, Texas - In one of the biggest matches of his career, Texas Tech senior Bojan Szumanski defeated former top-10 Illinois player Ryan De Heart yesterday at the $50,000 Lubbock Challenger. Szumanski will next face Fritz Wolmarrans on Thurs., Sept. 20, in the second round of play.
After receiving an automatic spot into the singles draw, Tech's No. 1 player Szumanski was set to face Ryan De Heart, ranked 370 in the world. Szumanski came out strong taking the first set 6-1, but De Heart quickly recovered moving in for the 6-3 win in the second. After being down two match points, Szumanski pushed the final set into a tiebreaker where he served up an ace for the 10-8 win.
Junior Sinisa Markovic was the other Red Raider to qualify for the singles main draw after defeating Luis Flores, No. 2 player for defending National Champions Georgia Bulldogs, in the qualifier. Markovic fell in the first round to Dusan Vemic, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles the No. 10 ranked duo of Szumanski and Rojmar suffered a first-round loss to Gonzalez and Soares, 6-2, 7-5. Tech's freshmen doubles team of Joe Hattrup and Jeremy Reed also received a wild card into the main draw, and will take on the No. 1 seed Dabul and Zeballos tonight at 6 p.m.
