
Tech Places Two in Singles Main Draw of Lubbock Challenger

LUBBOCK, Texas - With the first day of the well under way, the Texas Tech men's tennis team has qualified two players in singles for the third-annual $50,000 Lubbock Challenger. Junior Sinisa Markovic defeated Luis Flores, member of the 2007 National Champions Georgia Bulldogs, earlier today to secure a spot into the main singles draw.
In the first two round of the qualifiers, Markovic defeated Carl Bergman of Sweden, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, and ranked tennis professional Fred Hemmes of the Netherlands, 6-1, 7-6(2). In the final qualifying round, Markovic continued his momentum to take a 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Luis Flores of Mexico, previously ranked No. 9 in the ITA/Fila poll (May 29) and No. 2 player for Georgia.
Markovic will next face Dusan Vemic of Serbia in the first round of the tournament. The Bosnian native ended last season flawless in conference play, 6-0, playing No. 3 for the Red Raiders and currently holds a career singles record of 42-15.
Also representing Texas Tech in the singles draw will be senior Bojan Szumanski, currently ranked No. 22 in the latest ITA/Fila preseason poll. A three-time participant of the Challenger, Szumanski will face Ryler De Heart in the first round of play.
