LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team hosts the $50,000 Lubbock Challenger presented by Virginia Buck for the third consecutive year. With the qualifying matches taking place over the weekend, the main draw is set to begin on Monday, Sept. 17, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Among those competing in this year's event are Robert Kendrick and Donald Young. Kendrick is currently ranked 101st in the world, while Young made it to the third round of this year's U.S. Open. The rest of the field showcases 32-ranked players in the top 200 in the world, including your very own Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Receiving a wild card into the main draw of the singles bracket, Tech's No. 22-ranked Bojan Szumanski will face Ryler DeHeart in the first round. Also playing for a spot in the draw is Tech junior Sinisa Markovic, currently ranked No. 93. Markovic advanced to the finals in the qualifiers this weekend after winning two matches over Carl Bergman and Fred Hemmes. He will face Luis Flores of Mexico at 11 a.m. to determine who will advance to face No. 7-seeded Bruno Echagaray in the first-round of the Challenger.
Tech's doubles will also be represented in the main draw as the No. 10 duo of Christian Rojmar and Szumanski will face Santiago Gonzalez and Bruno Soares at 7 p.m. In addition, Illya Babincuic and Milos Kustudija will take on Farrukh Dustov and Andrey Kumantsov at 5 p.m. The two battled their way through the qualifiers defeating teammates Michael Breler and Markovic, 6-3, 7-5, in the final round.
During the weekend, Tech had a number of Red Raiders participating in the qualifying singles of the tournament. Freshmen Joe Hattrup, Ethan Horn, and Jeremy Reed all fell in the first round of play, as well as Breler losing to Luis Flores and James Wilson falling to Santiago Gonzalez. Rojmar and Kustudija both suffered second-round losses after defeating teammates Jay Wofford and Reed in the first round, respectively.
