Red Raiders Take Seventh at Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team concluded the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic Sunday in seventh place after firing a three-over 293 in the last round of competition in Rocky Face, Geo. The Red Raiders finished seven strokes ahead of No. 6 Florida and 11 shots in front of No. 7 Clemson.
Tech entered the final 18 holes in 12th place after shooting 595 through the first two rounds of competition. Behind solid outings from Will Griffin, Matt Smith and Santiago Rivas, Tech moved up five spots. The Red Raiders' seventh-place finish, just four strokes behind No. 4 Georgia, came against many of the top 25 teams in the country.
Griffin fired a one-under 71 Sunday, while Smith and Rivas each shot a one-over 73 over the final 18 holes. Freshman Sergio Franky shot a two-over 74, while Garrett Merrell shot a 75 to round out the Red Raiders' final round.
After turning in a solid first two rounds, sophomore Will Griffin shot a one-under 71 to move up to sixth place. The San Antonio, Texas, native finished with a one-under 215, just one stroke out of fifth place and three strokes out of third place, over the three rounds of competition to lead Tech. Rivas finished the Classic with a five-over 221 to land him in 28th place.
The Red Raiders will return to Lubbock this week before heading for the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Shoal Creek, Ala. on Sept. 24-25.
