Texas Tech's cross country teams captured first place and set personal bests at the Jackrabbit meet Friday evening. Several Red Raiders set personal bests during the meet.
The women claimed the top spot of the meet behind the efforts of Sally Kipyego, Irene Kimaiyo and Asia Diaz. Taking the lead on the women's competition, Kipyego and Kimaiyo took the first and second-spots. Kipyego, 2006 NCAA national title holder, clocked in at 15:46.3 with Kimaiyo following with a 16:19, finishing three seconds ahead of South Plains' Lillian Badaru. Diaz followed her teammates in sixth overall and a third-place finish among the Tech runners.
All three individuals, clocked personal bests compared to last year's course times. Kipyego passed her time by a little under a minute, while Kimaiyo dropped 30 seconds from her time. Diaz improved her time by 7.3 seconds with a 17:12. The next set of Red Raiders to finish was freshmen Katherine Priebe and Michelle Guzman, who placed 12th and 13th, respectively The women claimed a first place with a total of 29 points, which bettered second-place finisher, was more than half of South Plains College by 31 points.
For the second time this season, the men's performance earned a first place finish. Eight Tech runners on the men's side finished in the top 15. Leading the pack was Edwin Sang, who finished third overall and first for the team with a 23:39:4. Following close behind, Silas Kemboi took seventh overall and second for the team with 24:18.3. His performance along with those of Kemboi, Gilbert Limo and John Means represented personal bests for each individual.
South Plains College and Abilene Christian took second and third in both races.
The Scarlet and Black will hope to continue its success at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Penn., Sept. 28.
Texas Tech will host the 2007 Big 12 Cross Country Championships Oct. 26.
