LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's cross country team finished second, while the men's team finished eighth at today's Big 12 Cross Country Championships held at the Rawls Course.
Leading the No. 14 women's team was junior and reigning Big 12 Champion Sally Kipyego. Kipyego continued her winning streak at the Rawls Course by adding another first-place finish to her Texas Tech career as she has won every race she has entered as a Red Raider. Kipyego set a personal best on the 6,000-meter course, clocking a 19:22.5. Colorado's Jennifer Barringer was only 6.8 seconds behind Kipyego.
Tech's Kipyego, along with her teammates, helped the team finish second with 83 points behind Colorado with 59 points. Irene Kimaiyo finished fourth with a time of 20:28.15, while Gladys Kipsang placed 16th with a time of 21:29.6. Kipyego and Kimaiyo were named all-conference finishing in the top 15 spots.
The Tech men finished in eighth, improving from last year's 10th-place finish. The team was led by Edwin Sang, who finished in 13th with a time of 25:09.6 - he was the only Red Raider to finish in the top 15. Also contributing to the team were Silas Kemboi and Gilbert Limo, who placed 29th and 31st, respectively, among the 100 runners competing.
Colorado's top-runners Jennifer Barringer and Brent Vaughn took first for the Buffaloes and contributed to another Colorado title. The men's squad has won every Big 12 Championship, while the women have won all, except the 1998 champion, which Kansas State won.
