LUBBOCK, Texas - After red-shirting last season with an ankle injury, junior Bojan Szumanski will represent Texas Tech at the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Individual Tennis Championships. The singles and doubles competition will begin Wed., May 23, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Szumanski filled the No. 1 position for Tech this spring after holding an impressive 12-3 fall tournament record. In the fall he won both the 2005 Midland Raquet Club and ITA Regional Tournament Championships. He received a preseason ranking of 12, and currently sits ranked No. 37 with a 9-10 duals record, 21-13 overall.
He made his first appearance at the NCAA Individual Championships in 2005, falling in the first-round of play. He currently holds two career records at Tech, which includes number one in career singles victories with 67 and number one in career doubles victories with 43.
In doubles, Szumanski teamed with sophomore Christian Rojmar playing in the No. 1 spot for the Red Raiders. The No. 33 duo compiled a 9-8 record this spring, and are the second alternate for the NCAA Doubles Championships.
Hosted by the University of Georgia, the individual championships will begin following the conclusion of the team championship match between No. 1 Georgia and No. 10 Illinois. The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete.
The seeds are based upon competition between September 7, 2006 and April 29, 2007. Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for singles, and any doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for doubles.
