LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech All-American Andrew Dresser fired an eight-under par 64 at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier in Midland, Texas, last week. Dresser led the field by three strokes in the single-round qualifier at Midland Country Club.
Dresser, who earned PING All-America third-team status in 2006 as a senior at Tech, has one more hurdle to clear before advancing to the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., June 14-17. Dresser will compete in the sectional qualifier at Northwood Country Club in Dallas next week and needs a top-two finish to advance.
"I'm real excited with the way I'm playing right now," Dresser said. "I've been playing well for a couple of months now, and hope to make a few more putts in the sectional. It's going to come down to a few shots there and every stroke will count. I need to keep doing what I'm doing."
Former Red Raider Kyle Willmann was the last Tech alumnus to compete in the Open when he advanced through local and sectional qualifying to participate in the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where he missed the cut.
