LUBBOCK, Texas - After several close matches, the Texas Tech women's tennis team dropped their fourth conference match today to No. 40 Texas Longhorns. The Lady Raiders fall to 7-7, 0-4 in Big 12, as the Longhorns improve to 6-6, 4-0 in conference.
To begin doubles play, the No. 2 duo of Brenna Jackson and Lakann Wagley defeated UT's Petra Dizdar and Ristine Olson 8-2. Next, the Longhorns edged the No. 3 Tech duo 8-2, tying the score one all. On the No. 1 court, the pair of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift went ahead 3-0 early in the match. However, Texas' Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic made a comeback, pulling ahead 8-5 and securing the doubles point for the Lady Horns.
With Texas up 1-0, Tech would need to resort to singles to turn the match around. With four singles players for the Longhorns boasting undefeated conference records, the Lady Raiders had a tough task at hand. At No. 2, senior Wagley was the first to go down, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Petra Dizdar. Next freshman Kerryn Potgieter couldn't hold off Ristine Olson, losing 6-3, 6-1.
Stepping in and securing the match for the Horns was Marija Milic, defeating junior transfer Jackson 6-0, 6-3. Shortly after, UT's Sarah Lancaster pulled away from freshman Maria Jose Andres winning 6-3, 6-2. Looking to put the Raiders on the board, it was up to Durham and van der Drift on the No. 3 and No. 1 courts, respectively.
Van der Drift won the first set 6-3, but freshman Corovic scrapped her way to a 6-4 second set victory. Having a rough day with her serves, van der Drift couldn't find her groove dropping the third set tiebreaker 10-7, and advancing Corovic to 6-0 in Big 12.
On the No. 2 court, Junior Durham sunk in the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 6-4. Refusing to let her team go down with out a fight, Durham took it to Texas' Stephanie Davison in the third set. Durham's determination finally put Tech on the scoreboard with an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker.
"It was a disappointing match as we didn't play to our potential," said head Coach Cari Groce. "We made a bunch of errors and were unable to finish when we needed to, especially in doubles. Overall, all of our players need to show up and play with confidence and collectively finish matches as a team."
The Lady Raiders are back in action on Sat., March 31, at noon as they host the Missouri Tigers. There will be drawings for great prizes donated by the Tennis Outlet, as well as a barbeque sponsored by Jimmy Peterson and crew. For more information and complete results, visit www.texastech.com.
