SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team closed its successful season with a close 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Missouri Tigers Wednesday in the first round of the Big 12 Championship held at Blossom Soccer Stadium.
The Red Raiders began the scoring in the fifth minute as sophomore Zhaleh Rezaie knocked in the rebound from Tiger goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore's save for her fifth goal of the season. The goal was the quickest to start a match for Tech this season.
Missouri would tie the match seven minutes later as Kristin Andrighetto took a Mo Redmond pass for her 13th goal this season.
With four minutes left in the first half, defender Sarabeth Clopton accidentally headed in a Missouri shot in the box to give Missouri a 2-1 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, Tiger forward Alysha Bonnick would make the score 3-1 on her 13th goal of the season.
Tech was unable to make the match closer in both the 77th and 80th minute off a Clopton penalty kick and a Chessa Purser shot attempt that bounce off the crossbar.
Maegan Wilber would make the score 3-2 with her third goal of the season as the sophomore was able to place the ball just above Dittamore's outstretched arms.
In a matter of 23 seconds, the Red Raiders would tie the match as Rezaie would score her second goal of the day off a Brittney Harrrison pass just inside the box.
After a scoreless first overtime, Andrighetto scored her second goal of the match 51 seconds into the period, advancing the Tigers to the semifinals with a 4-3 win.
"First of all, I just want to say how proud I am of these girls for how hard they fought and the number of streaks they have broken this year," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Being down 3-1 with around ten minutes to go, few gave us a chance, but our girls fought hard and sent it to overtime. These girls never gave up and were led by two great seniors in Priscilla Esquivel and Kim Cypert. This team has helped put Texas Tech soccer back on the map."
Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon finished the match with nine saves, with Rezaie leading the offensive attack with four shots.
The Tigers outshot the Red Raiders, 31-14, while also attempting seven corner kicks to Tech's four.
The Red Raiders had not previously come back from at least two goals down this season prior to today. Tech closes the season with a 7-8-2 overall record.
