
Red Raiders Advance at ITA Regionals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Participating in the 2007 ITA South Central Regionals, the Texas Tech men's tennis team advanced two players in singles and one in doubles today in the opening rounds in Austin, Texas. Play continues tomorrow, Oct. 21, at 9:30 a.m. at the Pennick-Allison Tennis Center.
Tech began the day with doubles play as the veteran duo Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic led the way. After receiving a first-round bye, the team defeated James Langford and Jose Zunino from Texas-Corpus Christi, 8-6. The two will next square-off against the No. 1 seed from Texas of Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
Tech's No. 1 seed Bojan Szumanski took down Dmitry Novikov, 6-3, 6-2, after receiving a first-round bye. He will next see Robin Fernandes from UTSA at 9 a.m. Markovic moved his way to the third round defeating David Costa of UTA, 6-1, 7-6, and will face Chong Wang from Rice at 8:30 a.m.
The second round didn't quite prove as successful for a handful of Red Raiders. Christian Rojmar suffered a first-round loss at the hands of Jonah Kane-West in a third set tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. In addition, Breler was topped in three-sets losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to David Kuczer from SMU, Joe Hattrup fell 6-3, 7-6, to UT's Kellen Damico, and the favored Ilya Babinciuc came up short against Zach Nichols of TCU, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6.
