Men's Tennis Team Heads for ITA Regionals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Playing in their fourth collegiate tournament of the fall, the Texas Tech men's tennis team will travel to compete at the 2007 ITA South Central Regional Championships in Austin, Texas. With 13 teams making up this year's field, the tournament begins on Sat., Oct. 20, at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The tournament consists of a 128-player singles and 64-team doubles draw. Teams competing include Baylor, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, Prairie View A&M, Rice, Southern Methodist, Texas, Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Christian, and Texas Tech.
Last time out Tech sent Ilya Babinciuc, Christian Rojmar and Bojan Szumanski to compete at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational. For the second consecutive tournament, Babinciuc advanced to the finals before suffering a 7-5, 6-1, loss to Kellen Damico of Texas.
The scarlet and black will have a full roster competing in both doubles and singles play at this year's Regionals. In singles, 10 Red Raiders will go head-to-head against some of the top collegiate players in the country. Tech's No. 22 Szumanski, No. 93 Sinisa Markovic, and Babinciuc were the three Raiders who were seeded in the main draw.
At the 2007 ITA All-American, Rojmar and Szumanski advanced to the semi-finals resulting in an automatic bid to the Indoor Championships. This accolade allowed the No. 10-ranked duo to bypass the remainder of the ITA qualifying tournaments. Competing in doubles this weekend will be four pairs, Michael Breler and Markovic, Babinciuc and James Wilson, Milos Kustudija and Jay Wofford, and Joe Hattrup and Jeremy Reed.
