LUBBOCK, Texas - Sparked by a strong offensive performance, the Texas Tech soccer team won its second consecutive match Sunday for the first time since 2000, defeating Nebraska, 2-1, at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Prior to today, the Red Raiders had never defeated the Cornhuskers in school history, losing all 13 matches.
For the second consecutive match, the Red Raiders allowed a goal in the first 10 minutes as the Cornhuskers' Sari Raber put one right past the diving arms of goalkeeper Tina Rincon in the fifth minute.
Tech would get on the board later in the first half as Maegan Wilber would tap in a loose ball that came off a Sarabeth Clopton pass for her second goal of the season. The goal was also Tech's first in the opening period this season.
Coming out of a 1-1 tie at halftime, Zhaleh Rezaie headed in a Karen De Leon pass from the right corner for her third goal of the season, second in as many games. Rezaie is the first Red Raider to score in consecutive games since sophomore defender Brittney Harrison did so last year against Nebraska and Texas State.
Nebraska would have a few last minute shot attempts, but none were successful, sealing the victory for Tech.
"We are really proud of how we put together two good games this weekend," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "We've talked all year about being not only a Friday team, but a Friday, Sunday team. We have a great amount of respect for the Nebraska program, and to beat a team like that for the first time in school history is quite an accomplishment."
With the win, Tech improves to 3-3 in the Big 12, 5-6-1 overall. Statistically, the Red Raiders had 20 shots to the Huskers' 16 and five corner kicks to their one.
The Red Raiders return to R.P. Fuller Stadium Sun., Oct. 21 against Oklahoma State following a quick trip to Norman that Friday to face the Oklahoma Sooners. Sunday's match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
