LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Invite began today with Texas Tech's Sinisa Markovic and Christian Rojmar participating in the qualifying singles rounds. The main draw of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center begins Oct. 4.
In the first round of the singles qualifiers, Rojmar faced Tyler Hochwalt from the University of Florida. Rojmar won the first set 6-4, but was unable to finish off Hochwalt dropping the match 7-5, 6-3 in the second and third sets. Next, No. 93 Markovic is set to face Oklahoma's No. 88 Andrei Daescu in the first round of play.
Sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren for the third straight year, the event kicks off the 2007-08 collegiate tennis season. The field of participants includes the nation's top collegiate players and doubles teams, including Tech's No. 10-ranked duo of Rojmar and Bojan Szumanski. No. 22 Szumanski received an automatic bid into the main singles draw beginning Thursday.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships include five days of qualifying events that precede the October 4-7 main draw. A 128-player prequalifying tournament takes place Sept. 29-30. This feeds into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments Oct.1-3, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2007-08 collegiate tennis season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
