LUBBOCK, Texas - At this year's Baylor Invite, Texas Tech competed against some of the top-ranked ITA players in the nation. The field included 31 FILA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national ranked players, 13 of which are in the top 50 and four in the top 10.
In the singles gold draw, Michael Breler fell to no. 35 Joseph Jung from Alabama, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Breler then advanced to the 16th round, defeating Denver's Nejc Smole, 6-4, 6-0. Breler lost in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(5), to Piotre Banas from UL-Lafayette.
Sinisa Markovic was defeated in the first round by no. 8 Erling Tveit from Ole Miss. Markovic went into the consolation bracket and defeated Laredo Community College and Denver. Markovic fell in the quarterfinals to Rice's Christoph Muller, 6-4, 7-6.
Dimitrio Martinez dropped the first match of the tournament to Tulsa's no. 7 Arnau Brugues, 6-3, 6-4. Martinez went into the consolation bracket and defeated UT-San Antonio and Rice, but fell in the quarterfinals to Texas A&M's Mikhail Pavlov 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(9). Teddy DiBlasi played UT-Arlington's Gonzalo Bienzobas and advanced to the second round. DiBlasi lost to no. 64 Adam Holmstrom from Denver, 6-3, 6-2.
In the singles green draw, Jay Wofford received a first-round bye to advance, defeating UT-Arlington. Wofford came up short in the 16th round to Wichita State's Tiago E. Santo, 6-3, 6-1. James Wilson lost in the second round to Laredo's Thomas Ollivier, 6-3, 6-4, after receiving a first-round bye. Wilson went into the consolation bracket, again receiving a first-round bye, but withdrew because of an injury.
In doubles action, playing in the gold draw, Tech's team of Breler and DiBlasi lost to UL-Lafayette's Delgado and Tabak, 8-6. Martinez and Markovic fell in the first-round to Poole and Tveit from Ole Miss, 8-2. In the doubles green draw, Wofford and Wilson received a first-round bye, defeating Lamar's Medina and Oliver, 8-2, advancing to the quarterfinals. Wofford and Wilson's were halted in the quarterfinals, losing to UT-Arlington's Herrera and Mattar.
