LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech dropped a match to No. 12 Texas A&M, 4-2, at R.P. Fuller Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday afternoon. The weekend series was the Big 12 conference opener for the Red Raiders.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Aggies were able to gain the match's first goal. Senior forward Suzzette Devloo beat Tech's freshman goalkeeper Colleen Pitts to tally the goal. Pitts recorded five saves in the first period in her first start of the season. Texas A&M had a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Texas A&M quickly gained a 3-0 lead in the second period scoring two goals less than five minutes apart. Freshman defender Nicole Ketchum scored her first two collegiate goals against the Red Raiders at the 54th and 58th minute. Junior forward Elisabeth Jones tallied another Aggie goal at the 71:55 mark to give Texas A&M a 4-0 advantage.
The Texas Tech offense responded when sophomore midfielder Shannon Sims recorder her first goal of the season in the 75th minute. Sims scored off of a Texas Tech free kick. Freshman forward Brittney Harrison posted another Red Raider goal at the 83:30 mark. Harrison is leading Texas Tech with 16 shots on goal.
Unfortunately, there was not enough time on the clock to keep the Red Raider offense going long enough to defeat the nationally ranked Texas A&M Aggies.
"The players played very well, and should be proud of this weekends effort," said head coach Neil McGuire. "Texas A&M is an exceptional team and we will learn a great deal from this game. Our fans were awesome and we want to thank them for their support."
The Red Raiders (4-6-0, 0-2-0) will hit the road next weekend for more Big 12 action. Tech will have four-consecutive road matches. They will travel to Columbia, Mo., to face Missouri on Fri., Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. On Sun. Sept. 30 the Red Raiders will face Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., at 1 p.m.
