LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski lost today at the 2006 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, to Luke Shields from Boise State.
In the first round, No. 87 Szumanski beat No. 5 nationally ranked Somdev Devvarman from Virginia, 6-3, 7-5. Advancing to the next round, he was set to face Shields, Boise State's No. 33 nationally ranked player. After losing the first match, Szumanski quickly went up 4-1 in the second set. Unfortunately, he couldn't hold off Shields, losing the match 6-2, 6-4.
Szumanski has an overall fall tournament record of 12-3, including two tournament wins. He won the ITA Racket Club Collegiate Invite on Oct. 15 and the Wilson/ITA Men's South Central Regional Tournament on Oct. 24. He has won matches over seven of nine nationally ranked collegiate players in the 2006 fall season alone, including this week's championships.
The ITA Indoor Championships are the last scheduled fall tournament for Szumanski and the Red Raiders. The team returns to the court on Jan. 27, 2007, as they host Texas Southern at the McLeod Tennis Center.
