LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Drops to Nebraska Red Raiders will return to R.P. Fuller Stadium on Tuesday
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's soccer fell to the Nebraska Huskers, 2-1, in Lincoln, Neb., on Sunday. Tech got an early lead, but it was not enough to stop the Husker's aggressive offense in the second half. The Red Raiders will return to Lubbock for three consecutive home matches on Tuesday.
The Raiders got off to an early lead against Big 12 opponent Nebraska. Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Brittney Harrison, tallied the first goal of the match. The freshman forward scored in the 19th minute. It was Harrison's eighth goal of the season and continues to lead the Red Raiders with the most goals. The Huskers tried to get their offense going, but sophomore goalkeeper Tina Rincon was able to collect four saves in the first period. Tech held the 1-0 advantage as the match was sent into halftime.
The Huskers came out aggressive in the second half. Rincon tallied two more saves early on in the second period. Senior forward Brittany Timko earned her 10th goal of the season after posting a Husker goal at the 35:19 mark. The goal tied the match, 1-1. Timko would score her 11th goal of the season in the 12th minute. The ball grazed Rincon's hand, but it was not enough to collect another save. Timko's second goal of the match gave the Huskers a 2-1 advantage. Timko holds 11 program records for Nebraska.
Rincon would conclude the match with 7 saves. Junior forward Priscilla Esquivel led the Red Raiders in shots (5) and shots on goal (3). Esquivel ties her season high with three shots on goal. The last time Esquivel recorded three shots on goal was against Prairie View A&M on Sept. 8. The Red Raiders drop to 5-8-1 overall and 1-4 in conference after falling to Nebraska. The Huskers improve to 7-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Big12 action.
"We played really well today and definitely had chances to win the game," said head coach Neil McGuire. "We hit the crossbar prior to scoring our first goal and then hit the post at the start of the second half. We ran out of gas near the end of the game and Nebraska deservingly took advantage of that. Nebraska is a very good team and I think we gained their respect."
Tech will return to R.P. Fuller Stadium when it hosts Texas State on Tues., Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. Returning to conference play, Tech will host Oklahoma rivals, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The match against the Sooners is set for Fri., Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. The Cowboys will come to Lubbock on Sun., Oct. 15. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
