LUBBOCK, Texas - Red Raider Bojan Szumanski captured singles title in the finals of the 2006 Wilson/ITA Men's South Central Regional Tournament today, Oct. 24, in Fort Worth, Texas. His win is a first for the men's tennis program, as well as in school history for this tournament.
Ranked No. 87 in the country, Szumanski faced No. 36 ranked Alexander Skrypko from SMU for the second time this season. TCU hosted this year's ITA Men's South Central Regional Tournament. Szumanski has won two consecutive tournaments, including the ITA Racket Club Collegiate Invitational, beating six of seven nationally ranked players
Both Szumanski and Skrypko, including the doubles champions, have earned spots to the Nov. 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus. The Championships will showcase 32 of the top collegiate players in country.
"Bojan had a tremendous weekend of tennis, winning six matches in four days, including victories over two nationally ranked players," said Head Coach Tim Siegel. "This is a big win for him and for the team, and this should help us in the preseason national ranking."
Szumanski, after receiving a first-round bye, captured consecutive wins over Lamar's Emanuel Oliver, Rice's Tobias Scheil, TCU's Kriegler Brink, Rice's Ralph Knupfer, and Baylor's No. 4 ranked Lars Poerschke in the semifinals, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Skyrpko defeated Tech's Dimitrio Martinez in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-3, and Texas' Milan Mihailovic, 7-5, 6-1, in the finals.
At the Polo/Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Szumanski was one of two Tech players to receive a bid into the singles draw. After suffering a first-round loss to Benjamin Carlotti of UNC, he faced Skrypko in the consolation bracket, losing 6-2, 6-2.
Last week in Midland, Texas, Szumanski won the Racket Club Collegiate Invitational. He defeated Arkansas' No. 1 player Blake Strode, 7-5, 6-2, in the semi-finals. He then went on to defeat Illinois's Marc Spicijaric, 6-3, 7-5 in the finals.
