ARLINGTON, Texas - Oklahoma's Mark Roberts struckout a career-high 12 batters to help the 17th-ranked Sooners eliminate No. 22 Texas Tech from the Big 12 Conference Tournament in the first elimination game on Wednesday morning.
Texas Tech was eliminated from the conference tournament in two games for the first time since the 1999 season. The Red Raiders now stand at 38-19 overall and will await their NCAA postseason draw on Monday morning, May 31. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show is scheduled for 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Sooners got a leadoff double from Jeff Scuderi and Russell Raley followed him with an RBI single to left-center.
The Sooners plated one run in the fourth as Matt Bose led off the frame with a single and then moved to second on a throwing error by second baseman Josh Brady. Eric Thonton scored Bose with an RBI double to left field, making the score 2-0.
Oklahoma pushed its lead to 3-0 in the fifth as they got another leadoff single, this time from Andrew McGuire. McGuire moved to second on a bunt sacrifice by Scuderi and moved to third on what should have been a routine flyout to right in the next at-bat by Raley. Tech right fielder Madison Edwards attempted to throw out Raley on the advance but his throw sailed out of play and McGuire was awarded home.
Junior first baseman Josh Brady scored Tech's only run of the game in the top of the seventh when he belted a solo home run over the left field fence. The homer was his 19th of the season and he will finish the year as the Big 12's leading home run hitter in 2004. He surpassed Travis Metcalfe of Kansas (season is complete) who had 18 home runs.
Senior Mark Roberts (9-4) tossed a career high 12 strikeouts and allowed just four hits in eight innings of work. The win was Roberts' fourth career against Texas Tech dating back to his freshman season in 2001. Dallas Braden (5-4) took the loss for Texas Tech despite a solid effort on the hill. The Stockton, Calif, native struckout five and allowed just two earned runs on six hits through seven innings.
