Women's Tennis Upsets No. 65 Kansas State, 4-3

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team upset No. 65 Kansas State, 4-3, this afternoon. The Lady Raiders edged out the Wildcats 2-1 in doubles and 3-2 in singles. Texas Tech now posts a spring record of 5-2 and 1-1 in Big 12 Conference play.
In the first position in singles play, senior Irina Tereschenko was defeated by Maria Rosenberg, 3-6, 2-6, while senior Kendall Brooks defeated Jessica Samosa, 6-2, 6-1, in the second position. In position three, sophomore Tara Browning lost a hard fought battle to Paulina Castillejos, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In the fourth position, freshman Lakann Wagley lost to Hayley McIver, 7-6, 6-3. In the fifth position, sophomore Katja Kovacic defeated Judith Diaz, 6-3, 6-3, while freshman Iva Gyurgina knocked off Aveen Alkhatib, 6-1, 6-0, in the sixth position.
In doubles action the Lady Raiders won two out of three matches. In position number one, Brooks and Tereschenko were defeated by Rosenberg and Castillejos, 8-6. In position number two, No. 48 ranked Browning and Kovacic knocked off Samosa and Diaz, 8-6, while Wagley and freshman Hristiyana Gocheva defeated McIver and Alkhatib, 8-5, in the third position.
"We're thrilled with the win," said head coach Cari Groce. "We're thrilled to have upset the No. 65 team in the country. That's huge for this program and huge for this team. We're here to stay and this says a lot about this team, their hard work, and dedication. We're very happy to have come away with the upset."
The Lady Raiders will head next to Columbia, Mo., where they will take on the Missouri Tigers at 12:30 p.m. on March 13.
