LUBBOCK, Texas - In a commanding style, the Texas Tech women's tennis team took care of Air Force today, 7-0, at the McLeod Tennis Center. Tech did not drop a single match on the day to move to 8-4 on the season, handing Air Force (9-5) their fifth loss of the year.
In the No.1 position in singles, senior Irina Tereschenko (Tech) defeated Laura Nigro (Air Force), 6-1, 6-2. Ousting Air Force's Katherine Bushey was Tech's No. 2 position, senior Kendall Brooks in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Tara Browning, Tech's No.3 position, had no trouble grounding Air Force's Gina Black 6-1, 6-0, while in the No.4 position freshman Lakann Wagley (Tech) downed Karissa Walker, 6-2, 6-4. In the No.5 position, sophomore Katja Kovacic landed Air Force's Katie Tomkie in back-to-back sets of 6-1, 6-2. Rounding out the last of Tech's singles in the No.6 position, freshman Hristiyana Gocheva (Tech) took care of Kelly Morgan (Air Force) 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action the Lady Raider combo of Tereschenko and Kovacic, playing in the first position, defeated the Falcon's Nigro and Black, 8-5. Tech's No.2 Browning and Brooks, and No.3 Wagley and Gocheva sailed through their doubles matches defeating Air Force's No. 2 Bushey and Walker 8-1, and No. 3 Vaccaro and Tomkie 8-0.
With a full team effort, Head Coach Cari Groce is confident that after the performance today the team is ready to enter the bulk of its conference schedule.
"I am really pleased with how the girls are playing," said Groce. "Everyone is stepping up and taking care of their business on their courts, which is what we need to be doing."
With the win today the Lady Raiders hope to take their momentum into the tough match-up with Baylor tomorrow March 21. Tech will begin with an 11 a.m. start at the McLeod Tennis Center, wrapping up the last matches of a three-match stretch for the team. Baylor enters the weekend match-up 5-7 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 Conference play.
