Texas Tech Sweeps Lamar in Season Opener, 7-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team started its spring season off with a victory against the Lamar Cardinals this morning, winning all six singles matches and both doubles matches.

In doubles play, junior Esat Tanik teamed up with freshman Bojan Szumanski to knock off Dean Clower and Ignacio Melus, 8-2. Newcomer freshman Dinko Halachev paired up with junior Jakob Paulsen to defeat Juan Pablo Alatorre and Emilio Kirby, 8-2.

In singles action, Paulsen knocked off Kirby, 6-2,6-3, while Tanik defeated Alatorre, 6-3, 6-2. Szumanski bested Melus, 6-1, 6-2, and Halachev defeated Clower, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Michael Innerebner won his match against Naeem Kath, 6-4, 6-2, and freshman Dimitrio Martinez defeated Christian Olivier, 6-2, 6-2.

"I was very pleased with the first match, Lamar has a much improved team," stated head coach Tim Siegel. "I am pleased with our effort and intensity level, and I think the three freshman played well."

The Red Raiders head back to the courts this afternoon to take on Abilene Christian at 1:30 p.m.
