LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Athletics Department announced today that the McLeod Tennis Center will serve as host to the 2004 Cingular USTA Men's $15,000 Pro Tournament of Lubbock that runs Oct. 9-17.
Singles qualifying begins on Sat., Oct. 9 and the main draw begins at 10:00 a.m. on Tues., Oct. 12.
Lubbock has once again been chosen by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) as a host site for the Men's $15,000 Futures Tournament. This outstanding event is scheduled for Oct. 9-17, 2004 at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech University.
This USTA Professional Circuit event attracts up-an-coming stars in men's tennis. These players are professional athletes working their way up the ATP ladder, and the quality of play is just a notch below what spectators would see at Grand Slam tournaments. This year's U.S. Open featured six players who played in last year's tournament in Lubbock.
Qualifying is open to all adult and junior males and consists of a 64 draw. For anyone interested in competing in the qualifying round and are eligible, the entry fee is $30 and signups will be held on Fri., Oct. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
There will also be a wild card tournament Thursday and Friday, Oct. 7-8, with the winner advancing to the main draw. To enter the wild card tournament, contact tournament director Amanda Knight at 806-787-0844 by noon on Wed., Oct. 6.
Texas Tech's Jakob Paulsen will compete in the main draw, while the remaining Red Raiders will play in the qualifying tournament. Radek Nijaki, who will play for Texas Tech starting in January, will also compete in the main draw.
