Raiders Advance Two Players to Fourth Round at ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team rounded out the second day of competition in Fort Worth at the ITA Regionals. The Raiders will advance two players to the fourth round in main draw singles action, one team to the quarterfinal round in the doubles consolation bracket, and one player to the third round in the singles consolation bracket.

In singles main draw action, junior Esat Tanik, who is seeded 16 in the tournament, won his match by default against Jeremy Blandin (17)(Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), who suffered an injury. Tanik will advance to the fourth round in the singles main draw tomorrow. Also playing in the fourth round of singles play tomorrow is junior Jakob Paulsen who defeated Jacob Martin (TCU), 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Bojan Szumanski lost his third round match to Bret Joelson (17)(TAMU), 6-0, 6-1.

"Jakob and Esat played very well today, and both will go up against some tough players tomorrow," stated head coach Tim Siegel. "We played well in doubles today, but lost. Overall it has been a good weekend for us."

In the doubles main draw, Tanik and junior Michael Innerebner were bumped from the quarterfinals round of competition by sixth seeded Fabrizio Sestini and Rafael Abreu (TCU), 8-4. In the doubles consolation bracket, freshmen Teddy DiBlasi and Szumanski knocked off Ivan Camillo and Jake Frederick, 8-1, to advance to the second round where they defeated Ignacio Melus and Christian Olivier (Lamar), 8-2. DiBlasi and Szumanski will advance to the quarterfinal round in the doubles consolation bracket tomorrow.

In the singles consolation bracket, Innerebner defeated Oliver Steil (Texas-Pan American), 6-1, 6-0, in the first round, and defeated Robert Kirchner (Texas-San Antonio), 6-4, 6-1, in the second round. Innerebner will compete in the third round of the singles consolation bracket tomorrow. DiBlasi won his first round consolation match defeating Sandy Farquharson (Texas-Arlington), 6-3, 5-7, 10-7, but lost to Jason Mok (Rice), 6-3, 7-5, in the second round. Freshman Rodney Vickers also won his first match in the singles consolation bracket, but lost his second match.

The ITA Regional tournament will conclude tomorrow, Oct. 26.
