
Raiders Wrap Up Day One of ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team finished the first day of competition at the ITA Regionals in Fort Worth. The Raiders competed well and will advance one team to the third round in doubles, as well as three players to the third round in the singles main draw.
In the doubles main draw, juniors Michael Innerebner and Esat Tanik defeated Josey Trinnier and Petri Van Rensburg (Texas Arlington), 8-4, to advance to the second round, where they defeated third seeded Alex Menichini and Daniel Scholten (TCU), 9-8. Innerebner and Tanik will compete in the third round of doubles play tomorrow morning.
Also in doubles play, freshman Dimitrio Martinez and junior Ryan Vogl defeated Nik Porter and Oliver Steil (Texas-Pan American), 8-3, in round one, but lost to Pete Stroer and Jimmy Haney (Texas), 8-6, in round two. Junior Jakob Paulsen and freshman Rodney Vickers defeated Ivan Kovalev and Zack Saloom (Univ. Louisiana-Lafayette), 8-6, in round one, but lost to Johan Brunstrom and Henrik Soderberg (SMU), 8-5. Freshmen Bojan Szumanski and Teddy DiBlasi had a bye in the first round, but lost in a very close second round match to Ivor Lovrak and Benjamin Becker (Baylor), 9-7.
The Raiders finished the day 4-3 in doubles. "Our biggest improvement today was in doubles," stated head coach Tim Siegel. "Michael Innerebner and Esat Tanik beat the number one team from TCU, and Teddy DiBlasi and Bojan Szumanski lost to Baylor's number one team, 9-7, but had a match point. It was a good day and everyone played well."
The Raiders finished the day with a 7-5 record in singles action. Paulsen defeated Amanjet Singh (Univ. Louisiana-Lafayette), 6-0, 3-0, to advance to the second round where he knocked off Nathan McGregor (Texas-Arlington), 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the third round in the singles main draw. Tanik, who is seeded 16 in the tournament and had a bye in the first round, defeated Robert Gallman (TCU), 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 to advance to the third round.
Also advancing to the third round tomorrow is freshman Bojan Szumanski who defeated Kyle Mims (Texas-Arlington), 6-1, 6-0, in round one and Antonio Ruiz (Texas), 6-2, 6-4, in round two. Martinez, who was seeded 17 and also had a bye in the first round of singles play, lost to Jeremy Salvo (Texas-Pan American), 6-4, 6-2, in the second round.
Tournament play will continue tomorrow with singles and doubles main draw action, as well as singles and doubles first round consolation brackets. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 26.
