LUBBOCK, Texas - UTEP's Kia Sams scored an insurance goal six minutes into the second half as the Miners held on to beat Texas Tech 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at R.P. Fuller Stadium in Lubbock.
The win drops Texas Tech to 2-11-1 on the year while UTEP improves to 9-6.
UTEP's Kelli Yeamans scored the game's first goal just 34 seconds into the game when she broke open for the unassisted goal. The two defenses held the scoring until the second half when Kia Sams hit the game winning goal at the 56:46-minute mark off an assist from Heather Clark.
The Red Raiders quickly answered Clark's goal as 13 seconds later Lindsey Duck scored her first career goal on an assist from Kerri Campbell.
Texas Tech will host the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night in Big 12 play as the two teams will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Friday night at R.P. Fuller Stadium. Tech will then host Missouri at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
