LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's bid to go 3-0 for the first time since 1996 was foiled by a late goal as the Southwest Texas Bobcats defeated the Red Raiders, 1-0, before 423 fans at R. P. Fuller stadium Friday night.
Southwest Texas' Allison Crain beat Tech goalkeeper Beth Lippert (Woodinville, Wash.) in the 70th minute on a 2-1 to give the Bobcats the only score of the game. Lippert who was playing for an injured Lindsay Fish (Dallas, Texas) played very strong in goal, making five saves.
The Red Raiders threatened with several rushes early in the second half, the best scoring opportunity was a crossing pass from Nicole Frilot (Albuquerque, N. M.) that freshmen Mariah Gutknecht (Sanger, Texas) headed just over the cross bar. Senior defender Lindsey Wile (Austin, Texas) also came close to putting Tech on the board as she headed a pair of corner kicks just wide in the second half. Tech's defensive pressure limited the Bobcats to eight shots in the game and only two in the first half. The Red Raiders finished the contest with 14 shots.
Head coach Felix Oskam was disappointed with his team's lack of flow in the game, but saw several encouraging aspects from the team
"We fought hard for 90 minutes. We never gave up. But overall we just did not play very smart tonight."
Tech will be back in action on Tuesday night as they host West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. at R. P. Fuller Stadium.
