LUBBOCK, Texas - On a rainy night at R. P. Fuller Stadium, the Texas Tech soccer team could not overcome both the wet conditions and West Texas A&M, as they fell to the Lady Buffs 2-1.
The Red Raider (2-2) struck first blood in the contest but could not manage the one goal lead. In the 16th minute, defender Lindsey Wile (Austin, Texas) headed a corner kick, which found the crossbar, but bounced right to teammate Catie Arsenault (Keller, Texas) for the junior's first goal of the season. Tech out shot the Lady Buffs 6 to 3 in the first period, but could not take a lead into half time. West Texas A&M's Whitney Cates beat Tech goalkeeper Beth Lippert (Woodinville, Wash) high with less than a minute to go in the first half to send the teams to the locker room locked at one goal a piece.
The second half was all Lady Buffs (3-0) as they clamped down on the Red Raiders and allowed only one shot in the second half. The two teams combined for 17 fouls and three yellow cards in the second frame, b ut it was the Lady Buffs who could manage the period's only goal. Aubree Hunter took a pass and caught the Tech defense and keeper on their heels to give West Texas A&M a 2-1 lead.
Freshmen Carrie Jones (Watauga, Texas) and Heather Rhine (Weatherford, Texas) saw their first action of the season.
Tech will be back in action this weekend as it travels to El Paso, Texas, to battle UTEP and New Mexico in the UTEP Miners Classic. The Red Raiders will square off with the UTEP Miners on Friday at 7 p.m. and with the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday at 7 p.m.
