EL PASO, Texas - Holly Cohen scored a pair of goals as the UTEP Miners defeated the Texas Tech soccer team, 3-1, Friday night in the UTEP Miner Classic at University Field in El Paso, Texas.
The Miners (5-0-0) took 21 shots in the match, while limiting the Red Raiders to only eight. Cohen tallied in the 28th and 89th minutes for the Miners, who defeated Tech (2-3-0) for the first time in school history. Tech now leads the all-time series with UTEP 5-1-0. Junior midfielder Catie Arsenault (Keller, Texas) had three shots on goal for the Red Raiders.
Tech entered the intermission trailing 2-0 but the game was closer than the score would indicate as the Miners only outshot the Red Raiders 6-5.
"The score did not indicate how close the game really was." Said head coach Felix Oskam. "I felt like we dominated the 1st half, even though they scored two goals. We played much better than we did on Tuesday against West Texas A&M. The main difference in the game was they had two outstanding forwards and that will beat many teams, and tonight they beat us."
Not wanting to sit on the two goal lead, UTEP finally broke Tech's spirits with the final goal of the night. For the half UTEP held a 15-3 shot differential.
The Red Raiders will be back in action tomorrow against the New Mexico Lobos at 7 p.m. at University field in El Paso.
