LUBBOCK, Texas - Kyle Willmann won't be making this trip, but the memories of his putt on the 18th green at the University Course in Albuquerque, N.M., remain vivid in the minds of the Red Raider Golf team as they face 17 teams in the 48th Annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Fri., Sept. 13, and Sat., Sept. 14.
The format for the event consists of 36 holes Friday and 18 holes Saturday at the 7,248-yard, par 72 layout.
Texas Tech last competed on the course in the NCAA West Regionals last spring. Willmann, then a senior with the Red Raiders, drained a 25-foot uphill putt on the final stroke of regulation to send the Red Raiders into a playoff and later to its first NCAA Championships appearance in 26 years.
Three Red Raiders return from last season's NCAA team, including senior Mark Hull (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill), who finished third on the team last season with a 74.2 stroke average. Senior Brooks Kelly (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) finished last season on a high note with a tie for eighth at the NCAA West Regional and a 74.0 stroke average. Also among the top-returning players from a year ago is junior Brad Jacobson (Hayti, S.D./Hamlin), who closed the season with a 75.0 stroke average.
This weekend's tournament is the second of the fall season for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech competed in the International Collegiate last week in Scotland.
