Red Raiders Advance to NCAA Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech defeated San Diego State in a one-hole playoff at the NCAA West Regional in Albuquerque, N.M., to advance to the men's NCAA Golf Championships May 29-June 1 in Columbus, Ohio. Kyle Willmann drained a 25-foot birdie putt for the Red Raiders on the final hole of regulation to send Texas Tech into the playoff.
The Red Raiders entered the 27-team field as the 20th seed and finished tied in 10th place with the Aztecs. Tournament host New Mexico finished in a first-place tie with the University of Washington, while UNLV, Minnesota, Pepperdine, Arizona, Pacific, Texas, Fresno State, Texas Tech and San Diego State round out the top 10. The top 10 teams advance to the championships.
Tech entered the final round six shots out of 10th place and rallied on the final day with a one-under 287 team total. Brooks Kelly led the way with his second-straight 70 and finished the tournament in an eighth-place tie. Willmann turned a 72 Saturday and finished tied in 16th place, while David Bolen also shot a final round 70 to finish tied for 23rd. Mark Hull (t99) and Brad Jacobson (t118) round out the scoring for Tech.
NCAA Championships host Ohio State finished 15th and did not advance, while Arizona's Ricky Barnes was the medalist.
